The Care Guide

Fine Gold-Plated Jewelry

The Complete Guide to Caring for Your Jewelry and Preventing Tarnish

Collier doré "l'heure suspendue" portée par une modèle de semi profil

Each Marie-Louise Orlach piece is inspired by an antique clock hand, a witness to a time gone by. Caring for it properly means honoring this inspiration and helping your jewelry stand the test of time in its own way.

That is why each piece is entrusted to our gilder and plated in the longest fine gold baths possible, creating the most generous finish we can offer for jewelry designed to accompany you for years to come.

Why does jewelry tarnish?

Brass and fine gold are living materials. They interact with your skin, your daily life, and the passage of time — and that is precisely what gives them their charm.

This patina is not a defect; it is a signature. It may evolve through contact with a few everyday elements to be aware of:

  • your skin’s natural pH and perspiration
  • creams, perfumes, and hair care products
  • soap or hand sanitizer residues
  • humidity, chlorinated water, or salt water

Everyday actions

Jewelry should be put on last.

If you apply cream or perfume, let it dry for a few minutes before putting on your jewelry. These products are often the first to affect the gold plating.

It should be removed in the evening.

At night, repeated friction can weaken the most delicate finishes. Your jewelry deserves a little rest, too.

It prefers to stay away from water.

Before showering, swimming, or exercising, we recommend taking it off. Chlorine, salt, and perspiration are the silent enemies of gold plating.

Store it carefully

Store your jewelry as you would a precious memory:

  • in its case or pouch, away from direct light
  • separately from other pieces, to prevent friction and tangling
  • in a dry place, protected from humidity

When traveling, an individual pouch or soft cloth is enough to protect it throughout the journey.

Clean it

A small, soft cloth is included with each piece of jewelry. This is the only care your jewelry needs: regular, gentle polishing is enough to remove everyday marks and restore its shine.

Avoid water, abrasive products, baking soda, and chemical wipes, as they may prematurely dull the gold plating.

How often?

A piece worn every day deserves a gentle weekly wipe. A piece worn less often can be polished before each special occasion.

Regular care, more than intensive cleaning, is what preserves its brilliance over time.

In summary

  • Clean it regularly with the cloth provided.
  • Keep it away from water, chlorine, and salt.
  • Remove it before sleeping, showering, or applying perfume.
  • Store it away from light, separately from your other pieces.

By following these few simple gestures, your jewelry will keep its brilliance for years to come. It will remain by your side and, little by little, become filled with your memories. The clock hand that inspired it once measured the hours; now, it follows you through yours.
